SOMERFIELD'S THREE OF A KIND AT Q AWARDS

Published:  23 July, 2008

Somerfield was the big winner at this year's Quality Food and Drink Awards, scooping three of the major category prizes, including the Wine award. The major multiple won the first-place Silver Q Award for Somerfield First Flight Australian Unoaked Chardonnay at the ceremony, which was organised by Harpers' sister magazine Checkout. Somerfield was highly commended in the Wine category for its First Flight Australian Shiraz/Cabernet, which was also runner-up in Red Wine. The First Flight Australian Dry White Wine was runner-up in the White Wine category. Somerfield's wine trading manager, Angela Mount, told Harpers: We constantly focus on over-delivering on quality at every price point on our own-brand range, and this fantastic award proves we are getting it right. The fact that two of the other First Flight wines were in the final short list demonstrates this even more.' Somerfield buyer Ric Griffith-Read added: The credit for this award is also shared with our partners at Miranda Wines, and with Neil Tully for his cutting-edge design work.' The Red Wine category was won by Sainsbury's, for its 2000 Classic Amarone, and the same retailer took the Spirits Award, for its Single Cru XO Cognac.
