The drinks industry has “vastly exceeded” its target to remove 1 billion units of alcohol from the UK market two years ahead of schedule, a report from the Department of Health has confirmed.
The announcement about warnings on alcohol packaging is reminiscent of recent rumblings in the legislative sphere that may see tobacco products move to plain packaging. Although warnings won’t take up the entire pack, there is a concern amongst those in the industry that alcohol will eventually suffer a similar fate.
The wine industry needs to prepare itself for adding calorie labels to wine bottles, as the battle against obesity continues, warned Wine & Spirit Trade Association chief Miles Beale.
