Government promises action for small businesses

Read more about

UK: Small businesses are being promised a "nothing off-limits" review as Government ministers embark on a six-month consultation period with key small business leaders.

Lord Bilmoria, founder of Cobra beer, is one of a number of leading entrepreneurs being invited to a series of meetings with chancellor, Alistair Daring and John Hutton, the business secretary.

"We're not just inviting them for breakfast, this is a long-term, not a one-off experiment. We hear their concerns and we're aware of them," assured Hutton.

The Government is promising a white paper next spring setting out a raft of new policies to help small to medium sized businesses.

Part of the review is to encourage small businesses to invest and grow after a government survey found that businesses with fewer than 50 employees have no ambition to grow bigger.

There are hopes the review will go some way to cutting many of the so-called "red tape" taxes that have been introduced under the Labour Government.
