Petroni Vineyards has found itself in a dispute with an Italian wine consortium over its use of the Brunello name.
Consorzio di Brunello di Montalcino, the organisation that oversees the production of wines in Montalcino, has asked Petroni Vineyards to cease using the name Brunello di Sonoma for its red wine as it is protected.
However, Lorenzo Petroni, founder of Petroni Vineyards, has disputed these claims.
He said: “The name Brunello refers to the grape and not the place where it is produced.
“The wine is clearly labelled as coming from Sonoma, the location of my Poggio alla Pietra vineyard. Its label has been approved by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, the US government agency that oversees all processes associated with winemaking and labelling."
