Online sales of beers, wines and spirits increased by an impressive 38% in February, according to figures published today.

Internet sales tracked by the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Index revealed the equivalent of £69 was spent for every person in the UK in February - a year on year increase of 46%.

It has been claimed that the surge in online alcohol sales in February could have been created by panic buying in anticipation of Budget increases as well as consumers ending their New Year detox regime at the start of February.

Growth in other sectors was slow compared with BWS. Sales of electrical goods fell 12.5% and clothing was up just 3%.
