A campaign to ban the Chancellor from every pub in Britain has now made its way to Brussels following the Government's price increases on alcohol in the Budget.
Following duty increases on beer, cider, wine and spirits, an Edinburgh pub started a poster campaign barring Alistair Darling from its premises.
Now 170 supporters and pubs have signed up to the campaign on the social networking site Facebook. Now a pub popular with MEPs in Brussels, O'Farrells, has joined the campaign.
The poster depicts the Chancellor behind bars and reads: “Barred. We hereby give notice that Alistair Darling, Chancellor of the Exchequer, is barred from this pub until further notice.” Licensees are being encouraged to download the poster and put it up in their windows.
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) claimed the price rise on a pint of beer would be a death knell for many pubs. Rob Hayward, British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) chief executive, said: “Government tax policy is fuelling Britain's binge drink problem by driving people away from beer, out of the pub into the arms of the deep discounting supermarkets.”
