New summer ad campaign for Bulmers cider

Thursday, 01 May 2008
Bulmers Original, the 'served over ice' bottled cider, is launching new national TV advertising introducing the concept of ?squeezing the most out of the great British summer?.

The 30-second advertisement entitled, Our Summer', breaks on May 5 and will be shown nationally on terrestrial and satellite channels.

The ad was directed by award winning directors Alistair Cook and Rob Davis, who filmed David Walliam's The Big Swim and features a voiceover by leading film and TV actor Stephen Tompkinson.

The end frame shows a wasp from the opening scene accompanied by the strapline, Bulmers. Squeezing the best out of the British summer.'

Graeme Mckenzie, Marketing Manager for Bulmers at Scottish & Newcastle UK, said, "The campaign is built around the proposition that the unpredictable nature of the British summer brings out the resourceful and optimistic side of our character and the new 30-second film captures the uniquely British approach to the unpredictable weather perfectly.

"The new creative forms part of a 20m marketing programme for the brand, which also includes outdoor poster and press activity and the brand's biggest-ever consumer trial campaign, which, coupled with the exciting addition of our Pear, Light and Draught variants, will help drive the Bulmers equity forward in 2008."

Nice uplifting advert... but I do find it amusing that all of the sunny scenes have been shot in Cape Town, South Africa! Perhaps summer isn't so British after all, and perhaps its not really "ours" either :-)

Are consumers so confused in the wine aisles that they need Sainsbury’s colour-coded labels to denote flavour?
