New protective legislation for Scotch whisky

New regulations that will put a stop to the bottling of single malt whiskies outside Scotland will come into force later this month.

Scottish secretary Jim Murphy, confirmed a number of laws laid down in the House of Commons were being introduced from November 23, to protect the industry and consumers.

They include improved labelling and ban on the use of the term “pure malt” that will halt the description being applied to blended whiskies. 

He said the regulations introduced “a stronger legal framework to protect one of our most cherished products”.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) called it landmark legislation for Scotch whisky.
