Rob Hayward has made a surprise departure from his position as chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association. Hayward, who has been at the helm for 10 years, has left "with immediate effect" though will be assisting with the transition process until a permanent successor is found. The former Conservative MP is said to be leaving "to pursue his political interests". He leaves at a time when the BBPA is engaged in a major campaign to halt the rate of pub closures and the decline in beer drinking, and to convince the Treasury to rethink its policy on beer duty. Hayward was due to represent the trade body in a pre-Budget meeting with Chancellor Alistair Darling on March 16. A statement said: "The BBPA would like to place on record their thanks for his contribution to the success of the Association and wish him well as he embarks upon this new challenge."
