Diageo to build £50m Scotch whisky distillery

Published:  03 April, 2013

Diageo is to increase its Scotch whisky production with a new £50 million distillery in the Scottish Highlands. Text Diageo is to increase its Scotch whisky production with a new £50 million distillery in the Scottish Highlands.

The distillery, which will create up to 20 new jobs, will be adjacent to the company's existing distillery in Teaninich, near Alness, but will have its own name and identity.

The company also announced a major new phase of expansion to its Scotch whisky production in the Speyside area. The combined activity is a part of the £1 billion five-year investment plan launched last year.

The new Teaninch distillery will have the capacity to produce around 13 million litres of spirit per annum from 16 copper stills. An on-site bio-energy plant will also be constructed to convert co-products into green energy to power the distillery.

At the same time, Diageo also plans to invest £12 million in expanding the existing Teaninich distillery to almost double its capacity. The single malt whisky produced at the new distillery and at the expanded Teaninich distillery will be used in a range of Diageo's blended Scotch whisky brands.

The spirits giant also announced it will invest around £30 million in new production facilities in Speyside, including a project to substantially increase the capacity of the Mortlach distillery at Dufftown. This will involve the building of a new stillhouse, which will replicate the unusual partial-triple distillation process that Mortlach uses.

Another element of the investment will be the construction of a new plant at Glendullan to process co-products in an anaerobic digestion process, producing bio-gas that will be used to power the Glendullan distillery.

Diageo Scotland managing director Bryan Donaghey, said: "This announcement is a significant milestone in our £1 billion investment programme in Scotland to support the global growth of our Scotch whisky brands."

Published:  04 March, 2013

Diageo has redesigned the Baileys bottle to make it slim enough to fit inside a fridge door.

Text Diageo has redesigned the Baileys bottle to make it slim enough to fit inside a fridge door.

The new look bottle is part of a global Baileys relaunch, with its "cream with spirit" campaign supported by a £1m marketing investment.

The bottle, available from this month, has been heightened and slim-lined to "give it a more stylish and elegant profile," a Diageo spokeswoman said.

"The new feminine shape also allows it to conveniently fit inside a fridge door, increasing the brand's relevance to the modern woman's lifestyle."

The bottle was designed by brand consultancy Lewis Moberly.

Chris Lock, category marketing director, said: "It is vital that we continue to drive and shape the cream liqueur category with exciting news and innovation. The bottle relaunch offers both - giving existing and new Baileys shoppers an extra reason to purchase."

Text Diageo is rolling out its Parrot Bay 'freeze and squeeze' frozen cocktail range across Europe with the support of a £2.1 million marketing campaign.

The range comprises three single serve ready to drink alcoholic cocktails: Berry Daiquiri, Citrus Daiquiri and Pina Colada. They are sold in a liquid pouch to be frozen at home before consumption.

Parrot Bay will be available nationwide in the UK in April, following a successful trial with Asda last year. It will be released in eight European countries backed by a £2.1m campaign, including TV advertising in the UK in July.

The move follows explosive growth of frozen alcohol cocktails in the United States, with 261% volume growth in the year to March 20 2011, according to IRI.

"The launch of Parrot Bay 'freeze and squeeze' cocktails in the UK is set to inject real excitement into the spirits market, opening up huge sales opportunities for the off-trade by offering consumers a new and exciting way to serve drinks during the ever-popular 'casual get-togethers' occasion," said Diageo GB senior innovation manager Louise Robbie.

Diageo has appointed Matt Bream as category development manager of its Percy Fox & Co wine business.

"We are delighted to welcome Matt on board. He has a wealth of experience in the alcohol industry and specifically within the on-trade market, which will be fundamental to drive our plans for the category.

Diageo releases "boldest" Talisker expression

Published:  20 February, 2013

Diageo has launched the first of several new expressions of Talisker.

Text

Diageo has launched the first of several new expressions of Talisker.

Talisker Storm, described as its boldest whisky to date, has been made from rejuvenated and refill casks at different ages and is bottled at the traditional Talisker strength of 45.8% without an age statement. The rrp is £39.95.

Master blender Jim Beveridge said Talisker Storm delivered the distillery's character in "one vibrant dram."

"We sought out some great mature Talisker, enriched and mellowed by time spent in carefully rejuvenated casks, and brought that together with some very fresh distillery character preserved by maturation in refill casks," he said.

Further expressions of Talisker will be released later this year.

The full tasting notes read:

Appearance: Full gold

Nose: At first restrained yet spicy, with a hint of struck matches; fresh-clean and growing in complexity like a gathering storm to reveal a honeyed sweet maltiness with ripe red berry fruit. Eventually a little well integrated mellow smoke drifts across the scene as a wild sea turns up briny, fresh clean notes, and an oily explosion of pepper

Body: Medium

Palate: At first sweetly mellow and rich in the mouth then quickly very spicy and increasingly stormy as the Talisker heat comes through. It's as if the pure, tongue-coating sweetness joins hands with a deep nutty smokiness to embrace those spicier notes. The flavour is elegantly drawn out with a good balance between sweetness, smoke and salt, which is all the more evident when a little water is added

Finish: Clean and of medium length, warming, with a lasting, smooth aftertaste, in which late peaty burnt embers can be found
