Independent merchant Borough Wines has opened its sixth London  shop, this time in Clerkenwell.

The retailer, which already offers a refillable wine bottle scheme at all of its stores, will boost this scheme by pioneering a refillable beer growler system in Clerkenwell, alongside its range of pre-packaged wines and spirits.

Borough WinesBorough WinesBorough Wines rolled out its wine barrel refill concept to other indies earlier this year, and has just opened its sixth sotre - in time for Christmas.

The newest store is in Exmouth market - earlier this year the group opened its first west London outlet in Kensal Rise, as well as neighbourhood restaurant 52 in Hackney.

Borough Wines co-owner Corinna Pyke, said:  "As a centre for innovation and creativity, Clerkenwell has a lot in common with the locations of our existing shops, and we have been looking to expand into the area for some time. It took a while to find the perfect space, but the iconic and foodie Exmouth Market feels like the perfect fit.

"It's exciting to bring the unique Borough Wines offering to a new audience and it is undoubtedly a big step for the company. We have already had a great reception from residents, visitors and people working in the area."

The other Borough Wines shops are located in Borough Market, Hackney, Dalston, Stoke Newington, and Kensal Rise. The group also operates two restaurants - Hackney's 52 and L'Entrepôt in Dalston.

Borough Wines started out as a small store in Borough Market in 2002. It was founded  by Muriel Chatel, as a way of bringing her family's wines to the attention of British drinkers.

Pyke came on board as co-owner and marketing director in 2011 - and aside from its shops and restaurants, it also operates wholesaler Expression du Terroir, which supplies a host of London restaurants, as well as over 10 Borough Wines Corners nationwide.

The Corners concept was launched in February 2014, with a host of other independent retailers adopting the group's refill system.

Borough Wines bottle refill system has brought the firm some acclaim - it allows customer to refill reusable wine bottles in store, from kegs with a changing selection of quality red, white and rosé wines.
