Earliest known vintage Cognac to be sold in Harrods
Harrods is to showcase a 233-year-old cognac, which has been recently recognised as the earliest known vintage.
The Courvoisier & Curlier cognac vintage 1789 was discovered in the the World largest Old Liquors collection of Dutch collector Bay van der Bunt and will go on sale for £95,000 at Harrods this Christmas together with a further four other Courvoisier vintages, priced between £9,500 and £38,500.
The historic cognac dates back to the French Revolution and was bottled over 200 years ago by the Curlier brothers, nephews of Felix Courvoisier. The liquid was produced from Folle Blanche grapes, a variety known for its subtle yet rich flavour, together with the finest grapes from the Grande Champagne, Cognac’s Premier Cru district.
It will go on display in Harrods wine shop’s tasting room and in recognition of this rare find, Harrods and Courvoisier issue an open invitation to Cognac lovers all around the world to join them in celebrating the discovery of this rare spirit.
The pop-up Atelier tasting room will feature L’Atelier de Courvoisier, encapsulating the art and science of the Cognac making process where shoppers can view how raw ingriedients of grapes, oak and copper are transformed into Cognac. It is open to the public during the hours of 12pm-4pm Dec 5, 6 and 8.
Guests will be treated to the St. Helena - a cocktail specially designed for the occasion by Nathan Merriman of London’s the Club at the Ivy. During cocktails, Rebecca Asseline, Courvoisier’s brand ambassador, takes guests on a sensory journey including a food pairing menu and master blender, Patrice Pinet, will guide guests through the heritage of Courvoisier, from grape to glass, and a tasting of the Courvoisier blend, Succession J.S.
