Programme on Britain's Hidden Alcoholics turns spotlight on wine drinkers

Published:  20 February, 2012

A programme focusing on middle class professionals "for whom one glass of wine is never enough" is the subject of a BBC Panorama episode to be screened tonight.

Britain's Hidden Alcoholics, presented by Tony Blair's former media spin doctor, Alistair Campbell, will ask whether "we all need to reassess our relationship with drink".

Campbell suffered first hand from the effects of alcohol, he said it contributed to his nervous breakdown.

Gavin Partington of the Wine & Spirit Trade Association, who was interviewed for the programme, said problem consumption was "an issue irrespective of what kind of drink you're drinking, or location - whether you're drinking to excess at home or in a pub".

"We need to reflect on this and address it," he added.

He said that wine had come into "sharper focus", despite recent declining sales the general pattern before that was of "significant growth".

Britain's Hidden Alcoholics will be shown on BBC One tonight at 8.30pm.
