As a challenge to the existing Italian wine fairs, those of Merano, Turin and particularly Verona (Vinitaly), the Unione Italiana Vini (UIV), in conjunction with the weekly Il Corriere Vinicolo and the Fiera Milano, has announced the creation of MiWine. MiWine is conceived as a biennial event, alternating with Vinexpo and taking place at the same time of year, and is intended to have an international, quality-oriented profile. The announcement was made at the annual general assembly of the UIV by its president, Ezio Rivella, who added that the opening date would be 19 June 2004. Unlike the main rival, Vinitaly, entry to MiWine will be restricted to wine professionals. This is a canny move, as it is no secret that many on both the production and commercial sides would prefer the biennial, professional-only approach.
