Visits to Drinkaware's website surged to a five-year high following the publication of research which revealed a gap between what consumers buy and how much they think they drink.

The charity received 21,000 hits to drinkaware.co.uk on February 27, when the study - which concluded that three quarters of people in England drink in excess of the recommended daily alcohol limit - was published. The study by researchers from University College London was based on the discrepancy between self-reported alcohol consumption and alcohol sales.

The number of people who arrived at Drinkaware's website by searching for "how many units in a bottle of wine" rose 467% and the charity's weekly unit calculator was viewed 22,059 times on the day, a 128% increase on the previous Wednesday. Overall the number of searches containing the word "unit" went up 178%.

"Units can be confusing and these findings highlight the importance of having clear information and simple tools to help people understand how much they drink. Last year over four million people came to Drinkaware.co.uk to get an accurate picture of what they are drinking and support to make a change," said Ben Butler, head of digital at Drinkaware.

A recent survey by the charity found that 64% of visitors felt encouraged to cut down on their drinking as a result of visiting the site.
