Portugal's Mateus is extending its reach with the launch of four new wines combining Portuguese and international grape varieties.

MateusMateus Expressions rangeSogrape, owner of the Portuguese brand Mateus, is investing £2m in the UK market this year.

The brand, which is handled in the UK by Stevens Garnier whose parent company Sogrape also owns Mateus, has 1.4 million consumers in the UK, according to Kantar figures. Sogrape is backing the brand in the UK market to the tune of £2 million for 2014.

It is extending the brand with Mateus Expressions -  aiming to recruit new consumers as well as exposing loyal customers to new styles.

The Mateus brand was developed in 1942 by Sogrape and its first wine was Mateus Rosé, which represented a major innovation in the wine world at the time. Mateus sparkling was introduced six years ago and has a strong international consumer following. Mateus Expressions offers rosé and white wine styles, packaged in clear Bordeaux-shaped bottles with a contemporary label design.

Matt Douglas, managing director of Sogrape's UK agency Stevens Garnier, said: "Our research shows that Mateus has exceptionally strong brand recognition in the UK and we feel that, as one of the leading wine brands in this market, we have an opportunity to present some of the most interesting Portuguese wine varietals in a contemporary and relevant way through our new range."

Expressions has a Baga & Shiraz, Baga & Muscat and Aragonez & Zinfandel - and  one white wine - a Maria Gomes & Chardonnay blend. All wines have an rrp of £7.99.
