Riesling producers from around the world head to London for Great Riesling Tasting

Published:  01 May, 2014

Over 50 Riesling producers from around the world will be in London for the Great Riesling Tasting next month which takes place on May 12.

The event has been put together by two key UK Riesling importers , Louisa de Faye Perkins of Great Riesling and Charles Taylor Wines.

As well as the chance to taste and meet producers from all the major Riesling wine growing around the world the day will also include seminars and special talks. Visitors will get the chance to hear the views of Jancis Robinson MW and Anne Trimbach of Domaine Trimbach in Alsace who will give an overview of emerging styles of Riesling. Wines of Germany, the event's sponsor, will also be organising a separate seminar.

Charles Taylor said: "As importers we are thrilled to be involved with this unique event, an exciting opportunity to compare the very finest estates from around the world. Riesling sales have been increasing steadily and this tasting will put Riesling well and truly on the agenda with both buyers and journalists. Classic regions have seen an upsurge in demand in recent years, but they are also seeing real competition from the New World.

"2014 sees an unprecedented number of estates from Australia and New Zealand showing a wide range of their Rieslings which I am sure will provide interesting competition for the leading German, Austrian and French estates. By bringing Riesling into the limelight we hope to put Riesling on the agenda, in people's thoughts and on the shelf."

The event has attracted winemakers and exhibitors covering the traditional Riesling areas of Alsace, Austria and Germany but will also feature top producers from Australia, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and the US.

The tasting will feature both large and small wineries and visitors will be able to taste full portfolios of wines including small parcels and limited editions.

Karen Sutton of Great Riesling, added: "We have had an amazing response from producers all over the world. There has been a 'collective' approach from these growers - they share a love of the variety and there is genuine excitement about being gathered together."

The event will also be open to consumers in the evening. It takes place at the Lindley Hall, Royal Horticultural Society in London London SW1P between 10.30am-5pm.
