Formula One drivers can now celebrate with limited edition Champagne GH Mumm

Published:  16 May, 2014

As Formula One drivers spend so much time throwing around quality Champagne, official sponsors, Champagne GH Mumm, has produced a special limited edition bottle unique for Formula One.

The Limited Edition F1 Cordon Rouge bottle includes the laurel crown, which has become synonymous on the podiums and with the winners of Grand Prixs around the world, with a proud number  "1" printed on the bottle.

GH Mumm's Cordon Rouge has been the official Champagne of Formula One since 2000.

Vicky Hoey, head of Champagne and prestige spirits at Pernod Ricard UK, said of the new bottle: " F1 is deeply rooted in British history and people love to emulate that podium moment.  We know that over half of all Champagne is purchased as a gift and with gifting options more sophisticated than ever before brands look to differentiate themselves from the competition."

Champagne has been an integral part of the podium celebrations since Formula One first started in 1950. But the tradition of spraying fellow drivers and spectators with Champagne started by mistake in 1966 at the 24 hour race in Le Mans.

Driver Jo Siffert, whilst celebrating on stage in the race, ended up showering onloookers when an overheated bottle of Champagne popped by mistake.

This was then copied in 1967 by Formula One driver, Dan Gurney, who deliberately sprayed the crowd after a win.

The limited edition GH MUMM Cordon Rouge Formula One bottle is available in Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury's with an RRP of £32.09.
