Naked Wines kicks off same-day delivery trial in San Francisco

Naked Wines has started trialling same day delivery in San Francisco and may eventually bring the concept to London.

Naked Wines has rolled out a same-day delivery service for wine orders in San Francisco, California as long as orders are submitted by 1 pm that day.  The same-day delivery service will be available Monday to Friday.

Rowan Gormley, founder of Naked Wines, said: "We already turned the traditional approach to making and distributing wines on its head. Disrupting the product delivery timeline seems like a logical next step."

For a limited time during the launch, Naked Wines will be offering same-delivery at no charge. Depending on the success of the trial in San Francisco, the company plans on offering same day delivery service in other cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Sydney and London.

The company's year-end financials for 2013, saw sales increase 40% to £53 million, which was driven by a 50% increase in the number of angel investors.

The crowd sourced business model is based on 'angels' opening subscription where they deposit a set amount of money to an account and then use the money in the account to support and buy wines of their choice.  The winemakers often pitch directly to the 'angels'.

Gormley said: "It has been a year of strong profitable growth for our company and I would like to thank the Angels and winemakers who made it possible."

Moving to same- day delivery will allow the company to compete with online retailers like Amazon, who are looking to grow their market share in the online wine retail space.

Since 2010 Amazon has spent $13.9 billion building more than 50 new warehouses to increase its same-day delivery capabilities.
