The Campaign for Real Ale has appointed charity veteran Tim Page as its new chief executive.

Page, who previously headed up East Anglian Air Ambulance and homelessness charity Emmaus UK, takes up the role on November 1.

Former chief executive Mike Benner, whol left his post three months ago, is now managing director of the Society for Independent Brewers.

Page said: "Camra has an outstanding reputation which appears to me to be the result of its large membership, its huge number of hard-working and committed volunteers and its highly-competent and professional team of employees. My aim is to continue to develop Camra as both the universally-recognised representative and the most-authoritative voice of real ale drinkers and pub-goers in the UK."

Pubs are currently closing at a rate of 31 per week across the UK, and Camra's Pubs Matter campaign aims to prevent pubs from being converted or demolished without planning permission, which it believes would help curb pub closures.

Camra has more than 165,000 members nationwide and thousands of active volunteers.
