CONSTELLATION QUIET ON MONDAVI RUMOURS

There has been no official confirmation, but it is widely believed that Constellation Brands, if it has not already done so, is to shut down the European operation of Robert Mondavi, which was taken over just before Christmas. A spokesman for Constellation Brands in the US told Harpers that he was unable to provide the answer to the big question', adding that an announcement would be made by the end of the month. However, Harpers understands that all employees of Robert Mondavi Europe are to leave the company, and it is still unclear when their replacements will be appointed. Furthermore, it is believed that nearly 200 Mondavi employees based at its Napa HQ will lose their jobs, reducing the Mondavi workforce to 520 staff. Before the Constellation takeover was announced, Robert Mondavi Winery had planned to sell off its luxury brands, and concentrate on its lifestyle' offerings.
