Published:  19 December, 2014

In the first of our annual reviews of the year for the festive period, we ask Daniel Murphy, founder of bulk wine broker Murphy Wine Company, to look back on 2014 and assess what he sees as the big challenges for the sector in to 2015. In a nutshell he believes few in the trade have really grasped the impact of a sea change in world wine production, nor of the potential for bulk wine in the UK.

How was 2014 for you/your business?

We drank lots and there is more to go.

What do you think were the most significant things that happened/ issues/trends that occurred in 2014?

Tescogate and continued globalisation of the wine business. The interconnection is getting greater and the future is being written and designed. Many have little idea of the changes that are in motion in world production and the impact that this will have in future.

What opportunities are you most looking forward to working on in 2015?

Increasing our bulk sales in to the UK - making more customers aware of what we can offer, service wise, including our industry knowledge and the genuine advantages found in the bulk wine business. 70% of ALL wines are traded at least once in bulk. Treasure.

What are the biggest challenges facing the trade in 2015?

Meeting the expectations of consumers. Value for money. Restructuring is happening - make the change.

Who are the people/companies/retailers to watch in 2015?

Aldi, Lidl and the discounters;  what they will promote and develop in a changing wine retail sector. Big hypermarkets are out and small and local are in. Whoever taps into this market with a value for money chain will be the big winners in 2015.

What are you doing for Christmas and New Year?

Going home to Bordeaux with the family for Christmas. New Year across the border on La Concha beach in San Sebastián.

What will be your favourite tipple over Christmas and New Year?

Probably Billecart Salmon Rosé...

Favourite Christmas film?

James Bond!

Ideal day out over Christmas period?

Walking in a brisk chilly Atlantic breeze to digest a meal along the beach in Petit Nice, just south of the Dune de Pyla, Arcachon. (Some dramatic coastal erosion there unfortunately.)

What do you want most from Father Christmas?

Laughter and merriness .... also some Graham's 2011 Vintage Port

New Year's resolution?

Eat more!
