Supporters of Jayne Powell, better known as Champagne Jayne, have started a fundraising effort to help pay her legal fees in her on-going legal dispute with the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC).

The legal dispute has been going on for over two years and is set to go to mediation in Australia next month over whether Powell was in breach of the Champagne trademark by using her Champagne Jayne name in her work as a journalist, educator and broadcaster.

The legal dispute has been played out in the Australian Federal Court since the CIVC filed its allegations against her.

The ongoing legal battle has placed considerable financial burden on Powell and her supporters in the case are now rallying round to try and raise money to help her continue in her legal case and any follow on costs that might be incurred.

They say Powell, who is not able to talk to the media during the legal dispute, risks serious financial hardship and "being driven out of business".

Over the last 11 years Champagne Jayne has made her name mainly in Australia talking, writing and educating consumers about Champagne.

She was named Champagne Educator of the Year by Harpers in 2012 and later that year was awarded Champagne Dame status by L'Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne.

The CIVC claim in its legal action that by using the world Champagne in her trading name but also talking about other wines other than Champage in her work is a breach of the trademark.

In a statement her supporters state: "Jayne has fought tirelessly and desperately to defend her livelihood but is not able to continue her fight without further assistance. Champagne Jayne's supporters have rallied together to create a fundraising campaign that will help pay her legal costs so that she can defend herself against the CIVC. "
