Cornish winery Camel Valley has taken first prize at the inaugural UK Fizz Festival with its Pinot Noir Rosé.

The sell-out event took place in Cheshire on November 14 and 15 and featured over 50 Champagnes and sparkling wines from around the world.

Over 400 visitors were able to vote for their favourite sparkling wine from each producer or supplier present in the Fizz Festival People's Choice Award.

The Camel Valley Pinot Noir Rosé was submitted by Lancaster-based Bowland Wines, a new online supplier of English wines.

Champagne Thienot took second place with its NV Brut.

Other competitors included leading Champagne houses such as Charles Heidsieck.

Matt Hutchinson, owner of Bowland Wines, said: "I'm thrilled an English fizz has won the vote - it is so important to get feedback from the public.

"Whilst industry awards are fantastic it is the consumer who matters at the end of the day."

Janet Harrison, owner of Cracking Wine and the organiser of the event, said: "The feedback from people who came has been truly amazing.

"Why shouldn't the fizz-drinking public have a vote? They are the ones who buy it after all."
