US wine booming in UK on-trade, new report reveals

Published:  30 November, 2015

Listings of US wine in the UK on-trade have doubled in the last year, according to a new report.

Listings of US wine in the UK on-trade have doubled in the last year, according to a new report.

The report, Wine On-Premise UK 2015, which is published by Wine Business Solutions, reveals that US wines are benefiting from the global food trend for Texas barbecue and Southern US food.

The new-found popularity of US wines in the UK extends across every price bracket, with high-end Napa Cabernet, Oregon Pinot and Washington Riesling benefiting as much as the popular Californian brands.

Despite the on-going popularity of Prosecco, Champagne has bounced back by 15% this year, with prices up 15% too.

Listings of English wines are up 27% in the last year, driven predominantly by sparkling wine. English wines now have more listings than those from Germany or Austria.

Last year's report found Argentina and Spain the most fashionable wine-producing countries, with growth in 2014 up by 12% and 25% respectively.

This year, the two countries are both down by some 25%.

The report also analyses the performance of the main on-trade wine distributors in the UK, what the most listed wine brands are, and analyses which restaurants charge by the bottle or by the glass. It also looks at how wine businesses can expect to make more profit from on-trade sales.
