November leisure spend falls as Britons watch spending in lead up to Christmas

Published:  23 December, 2015

Last month the average British household spent £188.41 on out of home leisure, which is a decrease of £5 (2%) year-on-year and a £17 (8%) decrease compared to October according to the Greene King Leisure Spend Tracker.

Fiona Gunn, Greene King's group marketing director, said: "With the Christmas festivities fast-approaching, Brits tightened their belts in November, reducing their spending on Drinking and Eating Out compared to last month."

Drinking out saw the biggest decline in November compared to the drop in the eating out and other leisure activities. The average household spend in November for drinking out was £39.40 which was an 8% decrease compared to a year earlier and a 15% decrease compared to the average October spend.

The decline in November spending compared to the month prior "was exacerbated further by a particularly busy October, when households up and down the country were going out to enjoy the closing stages of the Rugby World Cup and celebrate Halloween," said Gunn.

It was not all bad news though as the decline in average household spend in drinking out was driven by fewer households taking part in the activity rather than a decline in the actual amount of spending among those who did spend in November, according to the report.

Those consumers without kids dropped their spending more significantly, decreasing spend by £18, which is a 10% decrease month-to-month. Those with kids only reduced their leisure spending by only £3 (1%) over the same period.

The Greene King Leisure Spend Tracker is a questionnaire based on a sample of 4,000 individual responses run by YouGov and analysed in conjunction with Trajectory Partnership on behalf of Greene King.
