Maggie's Farm rum wins ACSA best in show second year running

Published:  04 March, 2016

Pennsylvania-based Allegheny Distilling has taken home the best-in-show medal from the American Craft Spirits Association's annual awards for its Maggie's Farm rum the second year in a row.

This year, its Maggie's Farm Queen's Single Barrel won the award having already taken best in class in the rum category.

Founded in 2013 by Tim Russell, Allegheny Distilling is an independent distillery situated behind the Maggie's Farm cocktail bar in Pittsburgh's Strip District.

It is the first producer of commercially available craft rum Pennsylvania since Prohibition.

All its rums are distilled from scratch in a Spanish-made copper pot still using turbinado sugar, which contains a high percentage of molasses.

It won best in show last year with its Maggie's Farm Queen's Share Double Barrel Rum.

The other best-in-class category winners this year were: Still 630 for Double Barrel RallyPoint in whisky; New Holland Artisan Spirits for Barrel Aged Knickerbocker Gin; Huber's Starlight Distillery for Starlight Distillery Blueberry Liqueur in liqueurs and distilled spirits specialty; and Ballast Point Spirits for Fugu Vodka.

The awards were announced at an event during the ACSA's third annual Distillers Convention and Vendor Trade Show at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago.

This year, the judges had to decide from a record 450 entrants submitted from 39 states across the US.

Aside from best in class, 34 gold, 173 silver and 132 bronze medals were also awarded.

The judging for the competition took place on January 19 and 20 at the Starlight Distillery in Borden, Indiana.

The 17-strong panel included Marianne Barnes, Martin Cate, Paul Criscuolo, Wayne Curtis, Martin Duffy, Tom Fischer, Pat Heist, Logan Hunter, Tom Jensen, Bernie Lubbers, Mike Miller, Juan Alfredo Pacas, Emily Pennington, Noah Rothbaum, Dave Scheurich, Gary Spedding, and Richard Wolf.

The American Craft Spirits Association is the only registered not-for-profit trade association representing the US craft spirits industry.
