ProWein 2016: Anticipated record breaking visitor numbers at ProWein

Published:  15 March, 2016

On the final day of ProWein, a trade show considered by some to be one of the most important wine business trade fairs in the world, visitors numbers are expected to exceed last year's attendees figures.

Although the final numbers are not in, Michael Degen, executive director of ProWein, said he is expecting an estimated increase of 5%-6% over last year's figures. Last year the show saw a 7% increase in the number of visitors and attracted 52,000 visitors.

He said: "It is has been a good show. There has been a slight increase in visitors, which was our target. We even had an additional 200 more exhibitors this year, which we hadn't really planned for. The big goal was to stabilise the space and have more visitors, which we have."

According to Degen, more overseas visitors now are attending the show with an expected increase from both visitors from Asia and North America.

"Every additional visitor we are receiving is coming from outside of Germany and even outside of Europe. So we had a good mix of German and European visitors, but now more people are coming over from the USA and Asia.

"Last year everyone said they were seeing more Asians attending, but this year many people have  been commenting on the number of North Americans they have welcomed on their stands," said Degen.

The continued increase in visitor numbers is due to the fair being efficiently run and primarily business focused, Degen added.

He said: "This year it has been stressed by many people that this show is really a business platform. Business is being made in Düsseldorf. One forgets that it is not typical for the trade show industry at all to have increasing numbers of visitors.

"The average of the trade show industry is that they are happy when they keep their numbers stable. So that is the astonishing factor of ProWein, that we can continually increase the number of permanent visitors."

ProWein 2017 is set to be held March 19-21, 2017 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
