First English wine appears on Liv-ex

Published:  03 August, 2016

English sparkling wine has been given a boost by appearing on fine wine trading platform Liv-ex for the first time.

English sparkling wine has been given a boost by appearing on fine wine trading platform Liv-ex for the first time.

The trusted web-trading platform has given English sparkling wine its seal of approval for the first time by allowing a case of 12x75cl Nyetimber, Classic Cuvee, 2010 to be traded on its site.

The move bolsters English sparkling wine's credibility as a world-class sparkling fine, and allows it to further position itself against its biggest rival, Champagne, which historically has dominated the sparkling category on Liv-ex.

"There has been a lot of excitement surrounding this trade, which was the first for English wine. We hope to see more activity on the platform for wines from England - something that will surely be welcomed by those in the UK trade," Liv-ex director Anthony Maxwell said.

Bordeaux, Burgundy, Italy, Champagne and the Rhone are the major regional groups of fine wines that regularly see secondary market activity.

So far in 2016, Bordeaux has once again dominated, with trade for the region accounting for 74.6% of total activity by value.

Bordeaux First Growths Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild and Haut Brion have been the most traded labels so far this year.

Champagne represented 5.8% of trade by value in 2015.

So far in 2016 its market share is 4.3%.

Although these groups represent the majority of activity, wines from around the world regularly trade on the exchange.

This year, the fine wine market has seen notable activity from New Zealand, Lebanon and Chile, along with thw USA, Australia, Spain, Port, South of France, Alsace, Germany, Loire, Cognac, Argentina, South Africa, with the 'rest of the world' accounting for increased market share in recent years as the fine wine market broadens.
