31 days of German Riesling winners announced

The annual push to promote Germany's most famous grape has come to an end, with additional categories created to reflect the quality of entrants.

The 31 Days of German Riesling campaign saw a 35% uplift on last year with 225 participants.

Among those were Ake and Humphris who took home the coveted title of 31 Days of German Riesling Retailer of the Year.

The wine and beer specialists won the top spot for their creative ideas and use of multiple channels and platforms to promote the grape.

they were closely follwed by runners up Lea & Sandeman for reaching a large volume of wine drinkers and achieving impressive sales results.

Also singled out were Luvians and Le Vignoble which were both given the new highly commended nod.

The Tate Group won 31 Days of German Riesling Restaurant of the Year for running a variety of activities, achieving results and a offering a great selection of Riesling by the glass.

Runners up were EatDrinkSleep, while the highly commended went to Skylon and The Jugged Hare.

Wines of Germany's managing director in the UK, Nicky Forrest, said: "The enthusiasm for German Riesling has been turning a corner for a while now and this year the enthusiasm from the trade to get involved has been off the scale."

162 retailers and importers and 63 restaurants and bars, including 54 Waitrose stores joined up to promote the grape.

This was spread across 100 towns and cities in the UK and over 50 locations across London.

A record breaking number of 60,900 consumers sampled the grape in wine bars, restaurants and independent retailers across the UK during the summer months.
