De Bortoli introduces ‘alternative grape varieties’ wine trio

Published:  09 August, 2017

De Bortoli Wines has introduced a wine trio blended with alternative grape varieties

The Down the Lane range from the Australian producer, available now, comprises a white Pinot Grigio Arneis 2016 with a touch of Vermentino, a rosé, Gris de Gris 2016 composed of Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir alongside a Shiraz Tempranillo 2015 (rrp: £8.99).

Created by senior winemaker, John Coughlan, the launch followed a few years of experimenting with alternative grape varieties from De Bortoli’s King Valley, Yarra Valley and Riverina vineyards, said the family winery.

“Down the Lane is a terrific opportunity to explore varieties that may be better suited to our particular climates and blending for interest and flavour rather the traditional single variety approach,” said Coughlan, who specialises in working with lesser-known grape varieties.

Featuring a bolder, edgier look inspired by the street art and hidden bars of Melbourne, Down the Lane won a bronze medal in the Harpers Design Awards this year.

Distributed in the UK by North South Wines, the trio is targeted at the off-trade
