Nederburg encourages trade to get cycling and pairing for charity fundraiser

Published:  11 August, 2017

South African producer Nederburg is encouraging pubs and businesses in the UK to help to ‘mobilise’ African communities and make it easier for people to access education, healthcare and economic opportunities.

This summer, the Western Cape-based winemaker is launching the #DoYourPart campaign in partnership with charity Qhubeka and is encouraging UK businesses to get involved by creating their own fundraising pages.

The campaign was inspired by the aim of providing bicycles to communities in Africa where access to transportation is limited.

The majority of Africa’s rural population still have to walk long distances for basic amenities and by providing bicycles to these communities, “Nederburg and Qhubeka’s continued partnership enhances lives by simply cutting travel time”, the company said.

As part of the campaign, Nederburg - which organises the annual Nederburg Auction - has recently established its first bike assembly facility on its vineyard in the Western Cape province.

It is able to assemble a minimum of 5,000 purpose-built bicycles a year and also provides all employees with their own bicycles.

Consumers can fundraise by logging miles for bike parts or a whole bike, worth £173.

Nederburg will also be supporting private businesses and pubs in the UK by sending out #DoYourPart fundraising cycle packs to encourage companies to set up team cycles or host wine pairing dinners.

Throughout the campaign, 5p from every purchase of select Nederburg wines in Tesco stores nationwide will be donated to the effort.

The winemaker’s auction is coming up on 15-17 September.
