Johnnie Walker launches Blade Runner special edition 35 years after original film cameo

Published:  19 September, 2017

Diageo-owned Scotch, Johnnie Walker, has launched a special edition blend to coincide with the release of the Blade Runner sequel – 35 years after the spirit appeared in the original film.

Johnnie Walker Black Label The Director’s Cut is a limited-edition whisky developed in collaboration Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve and Johnnie Walker master blender Jim Beveridge.

The special edition, which comprises a custom blended whisky and futuristic bottle, will be released alongside the film at the beginning of October.

As with the original, when it is drunk by Harrison Ford’s character Rick Deckard, the new bottle will also appear in the sequel.

To mark the collaboration, Johnnie Walker has also released four digital vignettes featuring Villeneuve, who discusses the project.

“Filmmaking is much like blending - you have to constantly be committed to creating the best possible outcome,” Beveridge said.

“Johnnie Walker blending tradition dates back to 1820 and I’m honored to carry on the legacy and collective memory of our other past blenders to ensure that the same whisky enjoyed today can be enjoyed responsibly in 2049.”

Only 2,000 bottles of the Director’s Cut 49% ABV release will be available in the UK and carried a premium price tag of £80.
