Spar bolsters wine menu with two ranges as part of own-label push

Published:  24 October, 2017

Spar has unveiled two own-label ranges – the first of four new lines to be launched by the retailer by spring 2018.

The Everyday Drinking and Varietals ranges, rolling out now targeted at consumers who buy wine by their preferred style and grape, mark the first stage of a new own-label wine push by Spar, focused on value.

Easily identifiable by its “style and value”, the five-strong Everyday Drinking range (rsp: £5/75cl) comprises two reds - Bold and Smooth, two whites -  Crisp and Fruity, and a Fresh Rosé. The quintet was aimed at customers who buy a particular quality at a certain price point, said Cath McIlwham, head of brand, Spar UK.

The Varietals range, meanwhile, reflected the modern trends in wine and had with its £6 price tag been “strategically sourced for best value”, she said.

Consisting of 12 SKUs - the Varietals range features a Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Chenin Blanc, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Malbec, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Pinot Grigio Rose.

Phase 2, due to take place next spring, will see a further two ranges introduced -  Exclusives and Regionals, but details of those are still under wraps.

Spar is supporting the newcomers with radio, in-store POS, newsletters and social media activity alongside consumer web features and PR.
