Babich among new additions to Berkmann’s Antipodean range

Published:  12 January, 2018

Leading New Zealand winery Babich has joined the Berkmann Wine Cellars portfolio, along with the Unico Zelo and Harvest labels and Woodlands winery from Australian.

The family-owned Babich winery is one of the most recognisable brands from New Zealand, providing a strong stablemate for agencies including Cooper’s Creek and Mahi that are already in Berkmann’s portfolio.

“We recognised the shared synergies of passion, hard work and flexibility and we look forward to working with them to help further develop their distribution in the multiple off-trade and wholesale channels,” said Berkmann’s purchasing director Alex Hunt MW, speaking of the Babich addition.

Two further wineries from Australia have also joined the fold: the Unico Zelo and Harvest labels from a small winery based in Adelaide Hills; plus historic Woodlands from Wilyabrup in Western Australia.

Unico Zelo focuses on Italian varieties, such as Fiano, Nero d’Avola and Nebbiolo, sourced form Clare Valley and Riverland, while Harvest operates as a co-operative for small growers in the Adelaide Hills.

Woodlands is best know for its Margaret River Cabernets, being one of the founding wineries in the region.

Hunt said of the Australian additions: “We’re excited to bolster our Australian portfolio with two very different wineries both sharing the same commitment to quality.”

He added that the labels represented the “modern face of Australia”.

The wines will be shown in London at the upcoming New Zealand and Australia Day tastings respectively.
