Swig Wines signs exclusive import deal for Austrian red brand

Published:  30 January, 2018

A London-based importer is looking to widen the UK’s understanding of Austrian wine after signing an exclusive deal with a producer of the little known Blaufränkisch red variety.

Chiswick’s Swig Wines heralded the deal to import the wines of young producer Weingut Groszer Wein as “the next step in the UK consumer’s understanding” of wine from Austria.

“Stylistically they are unique,” said Swig Wines owner Robin Davis. “They will provide excitement and intrigue to advanced wine drinkers but also will be fun to more regular consumers on the hunt for something different”

Groszer Wein has only been making wine since 2012, following the purchase of 16 ha of old vines in the Eisenberg region. The producer claims the area’s green slate soils impart “minerality and radiant fruit” to the wines, “emphasising Blaufränkisch’s “pithy acidity and tannic structure.”

Now releasing its fifth vintage, Groszer Wein uses natural methods to produce its wines, which are slow matured in neutral, large format oak barrels. All work on the vineyards is done by hand and greencover is maintained to loosen soil.

“We’ve become totally committed to following a natural path, and are working in the direction of organic certification,” said Antonia Voit, who manages Groszer Wein’s vineyards, which now span 26 has across the Eisenberg Hill.
