Published:  07 February, 2018

Australian winery Calabria has promoted Emma Norbiato to the role of chief winemaker.

Norbiato, who takes over from Bill Calabria, will in her new role take on responsibility for the winemaking and stylistic direction of the Calabria Family's wine portfolio, working together with its team of winemakers and grape growers.

Taking on the role with immediate effect Norbiato, who joined Calabria in 2009, takes over from Bill Calabria. During her time with the winery, she was named Australia's Women in Wine ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in 2016.

The appointment reinforced the "strong investment" Calabria would be making in its portfolio moving forward, said Bill Calabria, adding her passion had allowed Norbiato to shine through the ranks at Calabria Family Wines right up to chief winemaker.

“Her extensive knowledge of the Australian wine industry, together with the strength of her award winning winemaking will be a credit to our brand brand and I know that she will continue to nurture the future direction of our portfolio,” he said.

Norbiato said she was “truly excited” about the upcoming wine developments Calabria had planned for 2018 from multiple regions around Australia.

She also paid tribute to Bill Calabria’s legacy: “Bill has been a great asset of our region and mentor to many and I am deeply honoured to take on this position and share the Calabria family story and wines.”

With 18 vintages of winemaking experience, Norbiato is also a senior wine show judge with over 15 years’ experience across both regional and capital city shows.
