La Gitana for Mentzendorff

Published:  23 July, 2008

Bodegas Hidalgo-La Gitana, the Sherry house responsible for La Gitana Manzanilla, has joined the Mentzendorff portfolio in an exclusive arrangement.

The London-based agent - owned by Champagne Bollinger and the Fladgate Partnership - will distribute the company's full range of Manzanillas, Sherries and Brandy de Jerez, from this week (1 September).

Andrew Hawes, managing director of Mentzendorff, said: For Mentzendorff it is an expansion within the fortified-wine market, building upon the base of our Fladgate Partnership Port brands. It indicates our firm conviction that there is a positive future for the quality fortified market, and in Bodegas Hidalgo-La Gitana we have the ideal complementary partner to our family-owned fine-wine brands portfolio.'

Although La Gitana was previously available in the UK, most notably through A&A Wines, this is the first time that the Sherry house has entered into a full agency agreement.

The potential is clear, with La Gitana already leading the Manzanilla market in the UK,' commented Javier Hidalgo, owner and winemaker. And as consumer interest in, and experience of, the authentic Spanish way of life continues

to build, so will the opportunity for sales growth. We intend to implement a comprehensive sales and marketing support programme to further stimulate this consumer trend.'
