Crowdfunding campaign launched for first Gin and Tea bar in UK

Published:  22 August, 2018

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched on Kickstarter to raise £55,000 to open what is mooted to be the world’s first gin and tea bar.

The Memsahib Gin and Tea Bar, which is to open in Cheltenham, is inspired by the British Raj period, in which many Anglo-Indian women settled in the town.

The concept is being launched by the company behind East India Café also in Cheltenham. The company said that at its East India Cafe, which was opened in 2014, the combination of gin and tea proved popular amongst its guests, and inspired it to open a bar exclusively for the two products.

The bar will offer Anglo-Indian cuisine, 55 seasonally selected gins including its own house-distilled gin called Masala Chai Gin. The Chai tea, which will be served at the restaurant and bar, is a mix of aromatic Indian herbs and spices that are combined and then infused with tea.

The concept of the Memsahib Gin and Tea Bar is to transport customers back to the 19th century, to experience the cuisine that filled the plates and gin glasses of the Anglo-Indian locals.

Co-owner of East India Cafe & the new Memsahib Gin & Tea Bar, Litu Mohiuddin, said: “Our customers at East India Cafe love our idea of mixing gin and tea together, so it’s a dream come true that we are taking the next step and opening our very own gin & tea bar, which to our knowledge will be the first ever in the world.”

The venue will serve Indian street food in the form of canapes. The menus are seasonal, and will change on a regular basis.

Upon arrival, guests will be greeted with a welcome drink and an amuse bouche. Guests will be served in rounds and will be presented with a balance of gin cocktails and canapés to ensure that all flavours are enjoyed equally.

The site is set to open on 47-49 Promenade, Cheltenham in Autumn 2018. It will open six days a week, from 12pm until late.
