Published:  30 October, 2018

Viña Pomal has unveiled a new wine positioned as a classic Rioja with a modern style.

Made by Bodegas Bilbaínas winemaker Alejandro López, Viña Pomal Compromiso is a blend of the five Rioja red grape varieties - Tempranillo, Garnacha, Maturana Tinta, Graciano and Mazuelo.

Each variety is vinified separately in order attain optimum ripeness then aged for 14 months, with the separate vinification process aimed at enhancing the virtues of each variety.

After the final blend, the wine is aged for four months before bottling in French and American tattooed oak barrels – a first for the wine world, claimed the producer.

The wine represented the key values of Viña Pomal - origin, tradition and soil, as well as its commitment to “excellence and quality”, said López.

“This wine represents a commitment with our origins. We combine the most traditional and the most advanced practices in order to achieve a genuine quality wine with a unique personality,” he said.

Produced at Bodegas Bilbainas – one of the oldest wineries in Rioja, Viña Pomal’s makes a range of wines synonymous with the traditional style of Rioja, including Maturana Blanca, Alto de La Caseta, Reserva and the flagship Gran Reserva.

Dating back to 1901, the winery was one of the original 10 registered Rioja wineries and today is the oldest in existence and, with over 250 hectares, Bodegas Bilbainas maintains the largest vineyard holding in the Rioja Alta district.
