WSET: Business Development Manager

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET and WSET Awards) is an awarding body and registered charity devoted to the development and delivery of qualifications and courses in wines and spirits.

Job description

Summary of role:

Maintain & grow WSET business/activity in all trade channels and with corporate/consumer groups with success measured by student registration metrics, with particular focus on Cambridge/Brighton/Winchester. Responsible with full autonomy in your area for implementation of the UK Region’s sales & marketing strategy. Required to attend quarterly sales meetings in London in addition to key annual industry events as required. Some weekend/evening work will be required, for which TOIL will be given. 

Key outputs:

  1. 1.      Business development:
    1. a.      Target new business with on-trade groups/outlets, retailers & wine/spirits suppliers
    2. b.      Develop new business with the consumer sector including corporates
    3. c.       Provide the UK Business Development Director with robust sales forecasts to include a business plan for the area that is reported on quarterly
    4. d.      Manage your area to work towards achieving WSET coverage in all key conurbations
    5. e.      WSET School Diploma: actively recruit students for various programmes

 

  1. 2.      Account management:
    1. a.      Maintain & grow student numbers with existing Approved Programme Providers (APPs)
    2. b.      Maintain & grow student numbers with key customers
    3. c.       Leverage network of contacts to build sustainable growth across the region

 

  1. 3.      APP management: ensure compliance with all WSET standards of operation through regular contact with all APPs including centre visits as necessary in co-operation with WSET Awards

 

  1. 4.      Events:
    1. a.      Proactively identify events to support your business plan and make a business case to the Global Events Team for marketing funds to support
    2. b.      Participate in key WSET events as required, e.g. Annual Graduation ceremony in January & London Wine Fair in May

Person specification 

Core competencies: 

  • Good knowledge of the UK wines and spirits industry
  • Well networked in the South East
  • Proven commercial skills/experience
  • Self-motivated & persuasive with key decision-makers
  • Well organised with good time management skills
  • Demonstrates initiative and flexible approach in all situations
  • WSET Level 2 Award in Wines & Spirits
  • High level of literacy & numeracy
  • Good IT skills: Microsoft Office 365 and Internet 

Desirable attributes:

  • WSET Level 3 Award in Wines or working towards it
  • Active social media profile
  • Creative thinker
