AA Award winners

Published:  23 July, 2008

France, Spain and Greece are the next up-and-coming wine-producing countries, according to the results of this year's AA Wine Award.

New Zealand and South Africa topped the list of increased wine sales, but the overall consensus from the award entrants - approximately 1,000 businesses - was that the Old World is due for a comeback. The winners of the best wine list are: The Harrow at Little Bedwyn (overall winner) in England; The Cross at Kingussie in Scotland; The Bell at Skenfrith in Wales. Judges were particularly swayed by an indication of real enthusiasm for wine and a degree of specialism, such as a good selection of dessert wines. The on-trade reaction to screwcaps was also noted, and Peter Birnie, the AA's chief hotel and restaurant inspector, said: Over the last few years we have been gauging the industry's view on screwcapped wines [], and interestingly they are now listed by the majority of restaurants and hotels surveyed.'
