Jeroboams and Rick Stein raise £5,000 toast to The Benevolent

Published:  12 March, 2019

Jeroboams, Château d’Yquem and Rick Stein have raised an impressive charitable sum thanks to an experimental evening pairing fine wines of Bordeaux with the "best of British” seafood.

The evening raised £10,000 for industry charities The Benevolent and Hospitality Action, which supports members of the UK on-trade, with the total amount split between the two.

Chris Porter, chief executive of The Benevolent, said: “We are immensely grateful to Jeroboams for selecting The Benevolent as their chosen charity for such a prestigious evening and cannot express our thanks to them enough. The amount raised will go a long way in helping us continue our vital work, supporting more people in our industry than ever before who are currently suffering financial, practical and emotional hardship.”

The idea for the four-course dinner, came about during a visit from Jeroboams to the Bordeaux estate where it was discussed whether the wines of Sauternes would complement non-dessert or cheese-based dishes.

Held at Rick Stein’s Barnes restaurant on March 7, the dinner treated guests to some of Yquem’s rarest wines alongside classic British seafood dishes.

This included 2015 Yquem with roast turbot with Dutch sauce, and lobster with Indonesian dry spice, matched to the 2013 vintage.

“The Rick Stein and Château d’Yquem dinner gave us a thoroughly enjoyable evening, achieving what we hoped for,” said Hugh Sturges, managing director of Jeroboams. “Wonderful wines, fabulous food and considerable and interesting debate on whether one plus one equals two, or three, in terms of food and wine matching.”
