ENGLISH WINE AWARDS

Published:  23 July, 2008

Nyetimber clear winner

The House of Lords was the venue for the presentation of the English & Welsh Wine of the Year Awards on 24 July. 89 medals and 35 Highly Commended certificates were handed out by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, the president of the United Kingdom Vineyards Association (UKVA). Sussex vineyard Nyetimber was the clear winner on the day, picking up three trophies - including the Best Wine of the Competition (Gore-Browne Trophy), as well as two gold and two silver medals. UKVA chairman Stephen Skelton said that the competition had been a great success on the whole, and praised the rising standards of English wine. But he also stressed the need to keep working on improving quality. "This competition has always been a spur to goad winemakers into making better wines, and I am sure that today's results will be the same," he said.
