Tanners snaps up Platt

Published:  23 July, 2008

Shrewsbury-based independent wine merchant Tanners Wines has stepped across the border into Wales for its latest acquisition: Terry Platt Wine Merchants.
Tanners has bought the entire share capital of Llandudno-based Terry Platt, which has been supplying hotels and restaurants since 1962 and is currently the IWC Welsh Wine Merchant of the Year. The day-to-day running of Terry Platt will not be changed, however, with MD Jeremy Platt continuing to head up the company, and the entire Platt staff will continue in the company's Llandudno headquarters.

For personal and family reasons, I have been considering selling the business for some time, but my first choice of potential new owners was always Tanners,' said Jeremy Platt.

I have known James Tanner [Tanner's owner and MD]

for more than 12 years, and the company is an excellent hotel and restaurant supplier with the same commitment to customer service that has always been so important at Terry Platt. It was important that the buyer should have strong Welsh credentials.'

We are two of the most committed wholesalers in Wales, with Terry Platt being stronger in north Wales and Tanners in mid Wales,' added James Tanner. Both companies won awards for their quality and service at the IWC, [and] Terry Platt Wines will continue to operate as a standalone operation with its own list and range of wines in short, it will be business as usual.'
