It's stem wars: Waterford goes head to head with Riedel

Published:  23 July, 2008

Waterford Crystal, the Irish glassware maker part of Waterford Wedgwood plc, has launched a range of stemware aimed at lovers of fine wine.

The Connoisseur Gold Collection follows the Riedel model of designing specific glasses to go with specific wines - there are glasses for Bordeaux blends, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Montrachet, Chardonnay, Champagne, Port and Cognac. They all retail for 70 a pair, except for the Bordeaux pair, which are 80.

The range was unveiled in Bloomingdales in New York last November and in London last week (5 June) at a lavish dinner held at Chandos House attended by Jancis Robinson MW and Giles Kime. Due to a long-standing relationship with Chteau Lynch Bages through the Irish connection, the guest of honour was the chteau's managing director Jean Charles Cazes and guests were served 1990 Chteau Lynch Bages.
