New Oxford Companion

Published:  23 July, 2008

The third edition of the bible' - otherwise known as The Oxford Companion to Wine - was published this week.

The new edition, edited by Jancis Robinson MW with assistance from Julia Harding MW, is the largest ever at 925,000 words and 3,900 entries. For reasons of space, all references to wine in distilled form (Armagnac, Cognac, etc.) have been omitted from the new edition.

Writing on her website (www.jancisrobinson.com), Robinson said: If the second revision corrected the shortcomings of the first, the third has required a radical rethink and is very much less like the second than the second was like the first... Because we needed to add so much new material, we have had to ensure that every word in the new edition deserves its place rather than just extending each article, so many entries have benefited from a bit of toning to add muscularity in place of the flab.' The third edition is published by Oxford University Press at 40.
