Moldovan wine set for return to Russian market

Published:  23 July, 2008

President Voronin of Moldova and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have announced that Moldovan wine will be allowed to return to the Russian market, subject to new controls over quality.

All shipments of Moldovan wine have been banned since March, causing massive financial difficulties for an industry that had been exporting over 80% of its production to Russia. It looks as though state agency Moldova-Vin will control all exports and develop a state-owned trademark.

A working group is to look into monitoring harvest quantities and volumes of wine produced to reduce incidence of fraudulent wines, while the state-owned National Wine Quality Control Centre will take on the role of quality control of exports.

Shipments of bulk wine look set to be banned again from 1 January 2007, in response to allegations of Moldovan wine being relabelled in other countries.
