French police crackdown on binge drinking day trippers

Published:  23 July, 2008

Drunken day-trippers face a night in jail in St Malo, Brittany after French police announced a crackdown on loutish behaviour at the ferry terminal.

Foot passengers are being warned that if they binge-drink and then return to the terminal at St Malo drunk, they will not be allowed to board ferries.

They are also likely to face stiff fines and a night in the cells to sober up, French police have warned.

The problem has been especially bad on Saturdays and the bar in the ferry terminal has been formally banned from serving alcohol after 5 pm by the port authority.

The French police say that more and more offenders are as young as 15.

Surveillance cameras have also been introduced at the port.
