New tracking scheme for Aussie shipments

Published:  23 July, 2008

Wine and Spirit companies have successfully trialled use of a unique identifier number to track and trace products moving between the UK and Australia.

The World Customs Organisation has developed this identifier number for shipments to keep track of the goods.

A Serial Shipment Container Code ("SSCC") identifies individual pallets, containers and cases and provides Customs officials with access to key information such as transport, financial and commercial data.

John Corbet-Milward of the Wine and Spirit Trade Associations, said: "The implications of the SSCC for trade facilitation in our sector are considerable, and during a period of higher security consciousness its use will enable both traders and Customs to keep far closer tabs on product as it moves through the supply chain".

Participants included: HMRC (UK) and Australian Customs Service, Constellation, Hardy Wine Company, Diageo and Trans Ocean Distribution. The WCO and the WSTA.

The pilot scheme has been extended to include additional stakeholders and complexity
